Audio terms

The words you meet in PPmp3's settings

Short definitions for anyone moving from a stock player to a full-featured one, written without the marketing gloss.

Hi-Res audio

Music stored above CD quality — typically 24-bit depth and sample rates from 88.2 kHz upwards — played without being downgraded on the way out.

Parametric EQ

An equalizer where you choose the centre frequency, gain and bandwidth (Q) of each band, instead of being locked to fixed sliders.

Bit-perfect output

The decoded samples reach the DAC unchanged: no resampling, no system mixing and no hidden volume scaling in between.

Sample rate

How many times per second the waveform was measured — 44.1 kHz for CD, 96 or 192 kHz for many Hi-Res releases.

Bit depth

The resolution of each sample. More bits means more dynamic range and quieter noise floor, which matters most on quiet passages.

FLAC & ALAC

Lossless formats that compress a file without discarding audio data, so the decoded stream matches the original master bit for bit.

DSD

A one-bit, very high rate format used on SACD releases and hi-res downloads, stored as DSF or DFF files.

Gapless playback

Consecutive tracks join with no silence or click — essential for live albums, DJ mixes and classical recordings.

ReplayGain

Loudness information stored in the tags so tracks from different albums play at a comparable level without touching the EQ.

Preamp & headroom

A gain stage before the output. Lowering it leaves room for EQ boosts so loud peaks do not clip and distort.

Bluetooth codec

The compression used over a wireless link — SBC, AAC, aptX or LDAC — which sets the ceiling on wireless quality.

Cue sheet

Is PPmp3 free?
PPmp3 starts with a full-featured trial so you can test the Hi-Res output, the 64-band equalizer and the DSP with your own files and headphones. After the trial a one-time unlocker keeps everything enabled — no subscription, no ads and no feature tiers.
Which audio formats does it play?
MP3, AAC/M4A, ALAC, FLAC, APE, WAV, OGG, Opus, WavPack, TTA, MPC, AIFF and DSD (DSF/DFF), plus cue sheets and tracks inside archives. Playback support always depends on the file itself and on your device's decoding capabilities.
Do I need a special phone or an external DAC?
No. PPmp3's own output engine improves what your phone already has, and the equalizer works on any device. An external USB DAC simply raises the ceiling: more driving power, higher sample rates and a direct path that bypasses the system mixer.
What can the 64-band equalizer actually do?
It lets you correct a narrow resonance, tame sibilance or add controlled bass without smearing the rest of the spectrum. Each band has its own frequency, gain and Q, and finished curves can be saved as presets per headphone, album, folder or output device.
Does it work with Bluetooth buds and car stereos?
Yes. Android negotiates the codec — SBC, AAC, aptX or LDAC — while PPmp3 keeps its DSP, gapless playback, crossfade and volume handling. Presets are remembered per output, so your buds, your car and your wired headphones each keep their own tuning.
Can I change how the app looks?

Does the app collect personal data?
